Tobi Josephine (also known as TJ ART) is a Nigerian-British self-taught mixed media artist based in Luton/London, working across canvas and sculpture in a range of styles including street art, contemporary art, and textured abstraction. Her love for art began during secondary school at GCSE level — a passion that would later shape her creative journey.

Tobi’s work is rooted in two central pillars. The first explores stories of everyday life and personal experience, particularly the intersection of being a Black woman living in the UK while also being immersed in Nigerian culture and heritage at home. Growing up in culturally diverse areas exposed her to fashion, self-expression, resilience, and the realities of gang violence, all of which continue to influence her perspective, character, and artistic voice.

The second pillar is centred purely around a love for artistic expression itself. For Tobi, art does not always need to carry a deeper meaning; sometimes it is simply about appreciating what can emerge from a blank canvas through creativity and experimentation.

Using spray paint, acrylics, markers, and layered mixed media materials, Tobi creates vibrant, energetic works that merge nostalgia, emotion, and expression with a contemporary edge. Texture plays a key role in her practice, creating the illusion of movement beyond the canvas and adding a bold, immersive quality to each piece.

At the heart of her creative practice is a desire to provoke thought and emotional response. Rather than dictate meaning, Tobi encourages viewers to form their own interpretations — asking what story the work tells them, whether they relate to it, and what emotions it evokes.

Driven by a passion for creativity, Tobi aims to bring colour, vibrancy, and individuality into homes, establishments, and brands, offering spaces a renewed sense of personality and modernity. As her practice continues to evolve through new mediums and creative exploration, her dedication to artistic growth remains unwavering.
